Kiev

Kyiv is the capital and the largest city of Ukraine. It has been standing on riverside hills of the Dnipro River for more than 15 hundred years. As the ancient legend says, Kyiv was founded by three brothers Kyi, Schek and Khoryv and their sister Lybid, and it was named after the eldest brother Kyi. Since then, Kyiv has become an important center of East Europe attracting foreign businessmen and investors to its economic and natural potential. As an important administrative center, Kyiv is a place for Ukrainian Presidential Administration, Verkhovna Rada, Parliament, and nearly all ministries and governmental departments. Its financial part consists of the National Bank of Ukraine around the world, as well as investment companies and funds, representative offices of foreign financial institutions, exchange markets, and more than 220 commercial banks. In Kyiv, more than 2,000 objects belong to historical, cultural, and architectural monuments.

Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra

The Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra, the greatest monument of Kyiv, was built nine centuries ago, at first as a monastery. Over a hundreds of years it has developed into a complex of churches and become a holy place for devoted orthodox Christians. Famous for its catacombs with the saints' hallows, Lavra is also called the Monastery of Caves. Museum collections of miniatures created by one master hand and church treasures amaze tourists from all over the world.

National Opera House

This theater is one of the oldest in Ukraine, located in downtown Kyiv. The beautiful exterior of the building was designed in Neo-Renaissance style and amplified by the majestic interior and the largest stage in Europe. Professional actors, incredible lighting, and rich decorations will leave in your memory a strong impression about Ukraine's dramatic art.

Volodymyr the Baptizer

The magnificent monument to Prince Volodymyr towers over the river-bank of Dnipro. Prince Volodymyr converted Kyivan Rus to Christianity in 988 and therefore is also called the Baptizer of Rus. The bronze statue was erected in 1853.

St. Nicolas Catholic Cathedral

The church was built in 1899-1909 by the architect Horotetskyi. It is located on one of the central streets of Kyiv(Chervonoarmiyska st.), and you can easily recognize its specific Gothic style and two magnificent needle towers. It has been refurbished thirty years ago and since that is used as the concert hall for organ music and as the church where Roman Catholic services are held.

Golden Gate

This fortified wall was to define the city borders and served as barrier works from the invaders in the 11the century, during the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. The tower of Golden Gate was restored 1983 for the 15-centenary of Kyiv, and it is the Golden Gate historical museum. The construction is located in downtown Kyiv, near the metro station Zoloti Vorota.

St. Sophia Cathedral

The majestic ensemble of St. Sophia Cathedral was built by Prince Yaroslav the Wise in the XI century. During the ages of Kyiv Rus the Cathedral has been a major cultural and political center. This Cathedral, located in the city centre, is famous for its ancient mosaics and frescoes dating back to the eleventh century.

Mariyinsky Palace

This gorgeous palace was designed by Rastrelli in 1750 and is located on top of the hill on the right bank of Dnipro. A hundred years later, after the fires, the building was reconstructed and named after the empress Maria. Nowadays the palace is used for official state receptions such as presidential meetings and international conferences.

Andriyivsky Uzviz (Andriyivsky Descent)

Andriyivsky Uzviz is the most ancient and steep street in Kyiv. It is a convenient place for outdoor fairs and festivals. The tourists usually buy Ukrainian crafts and artworks in numerous art galleries and shops there. The street is called after Saint Andrew who came to Kiev and put up a cross on the place where the Saint Andrew's Church now stands. The so-called ‘One street museum’ located on Andriyivsky Uzviz reveal the history of the ancient street and its inhabitants.

Volodymyr Cathedral

This Russian Orthodox Church was built in 1882 in Neo-Byzantine style. The famous Russian artists painted the murals of the church interior and the Venetian masters made the mosaics. Also the choir music performed in the church is worth listening to. The church is located on one of city's central streets, T. Shevchenka blvd.

Khreschatyk

Khreschatyk is the front street of Kyiv. Some times ago it was restored saving the historical architectural design of buildings. Khreschatyk is the place that combines the features of a business and administrative centre. The street leads to Maidan Nezalezhnosti, the country's main square and the most popular place for meetings. On weekends and holidays when the traffic is blocked on Khreschatyk you can have a nice walk in this street.
